The 2012 Mazda 5. The last "mini" minivan

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYoEUavRreIFlvDAH_AT7uPmBvxezPIDNknFbLxaiQYXmTry_VutpMlRVtFnKRq1l_2gSa9OraFXPL38e7SMO4fUwoOPyHnTxiblQFzk_Abl7fuqriJhyphenhyphenFFEdwfOaymUpSo2858K8O9UKl/s1600/tirekicker.blogspot.com2012mazda5front.jpg

You've probably noticed, but the "mini" has been gone from most minivans for a decade or more now. The Honda Odyssey is only 7 inches shorter than a 1964 Chevrolet Impala...and those were big cars.

Mazda's been bucking the trend all along...the vehicle once called the MPV and now the Mazda 5 has never suffered from mission creep. Sales, however, have suffered, as buyers shell out for the ever-bigger not-so-minivans.

For 2012, there's an all-new Mazda 5 and....Mazda's stuck to its guns. The 5 is 22 inches...almost two feet....shorter than the Odyssey...20 inches trimmer than the Toyota Sienna.
Now, don't get us wrong. We love the Sienna (the Odyssey? Beats us. Honda hasn't put one in our hands in three years of TireKicker). But not everybody needs that much minivan.

The 2012 Mazda 5 is about the size of the minivan as it's known in Europe. How well does that work here? Well, we arranged to borrow one for a week from Chapman Mazda in Phoenix so we could see for ourselves.

The answer? It's terrific. Small size and lighter weight help make the new 5 a joy to maneuver in city traffic...and Mazda's commitment to building vehicles that are fun to drive doesn't have an asterisk after it that says "except for minivans".

157 horsepower from a 16-valve DOHC four is more than adequate to move this lighter machine, and even with a 5-speed automatic (as opposed to 6 or more), the mileage estimates are very good for a minivan (EPA says 21 city/28 highway).

The styling? Love it. There's character, fluidity, a sense of playfulness merged with purpose that promises you will have fun driving it. Take a glance at the picture below. That's a six-speed manual gearbox sticking out of the console. Yes, a minivan with a manual. Just order the Sport model. It'll cost you $1,000 less than the automatic.

The big minivans start within a stone's throw of $30,000. The top-of-the-line Sienna we tested last year topped out at $45,000 and change.

The Mazda 5 Sport?

$20,195. That's with the automatic. $19,195 with the six-speed.

That's for three rows of seats (two seats per row...total of six), 16-inch alloy wheels, power mirrors, halogen headlights, rear wiper with washer, captains chairs, a fold-out table for the second row, automatic climate control, a 6-speaker audio system, tilt & telescoping steering column, power windows and locks and remote keyless entry.

$795 for delivery and handling and the one we borrowed from Chapman rang in at $20,990. It was absolutely stock...zero options. And it was terrific. If it had been a stick, it would have stopped ten bucks shy of 20 grand.

There are people who need every inch of room in the sumo-class minivans. But you might not be one of them. The Mazda 5 is the first of a new wave of smaller minivans (Ford's on the way with the C-Max, though that will be sold in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions only, and there will be others), but there's no need to wait. The 5 is here now and it's very, very good.

The new Mazda 2 suspension system

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_FoXyvaPSnVk/Se9QtCIY0II/AAAAAAABtNw/TwcbugHy_tk/s1600/Mazda2-Diesel-Sportt45.jpg

The Zoom-Zoom driving experience that Mazda strives for has two key attributes: 1) a sense of linear acceleration and deceleration that responds crisply to how far the accelerator pedal is depressed, allowing the driver to control car speed as desired; and 2) a sense of liveliness through immediate response to the accelerator for quick off-the-line acceleration and overtaking. The development team targeted a performance feel reflecting enhancement of both of these key attributes without adversely impacting on the Mazda 2's superior fuel economy as a subcompact car.

Nimble Handling and a Stable Ride;
The new Mazda 2 inherits a highly regarded suspension system, which has MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion-beam axle at the rear. With improved steering and braking systems, the resulting dynamic performance yields consistently responsive handling and a smooth, stable ride that draws much from the legendary MX-5.

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/upload/9233/images/2Mazda21.3TS23drCARreview.jpg

The Mazda 2’s EPA ratings say to expect 28 mpg city and 34 highway (35 with the manual), and the lead feet in our office achieved 28 mpg, partly as a function of constantly flooring the throttle to get the automatic to downshift and put the engine in a more usable rev range. (We saw 33 mpg from the manual-equipped 2, although it saw a lot more highway driving.)

The basic form of the new Mazda 2

http://www.mazdainthenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/mazda2-image1.jpg

Originally launched in 2007, the new Mazda 2 was first introduced in Europe, Japan and Australia. Its launch created a unique offering in the B-car (subcompact) segment, especially through its distinguished design and outstanding driving performance. Since then, it has been highly acclaimed throughout the world, winning 48 automotive awards, including "Car of the Year" accolades in many markets, including Japan, New Zealand, Chile, Bulgaria and Greece. Notably, the Mazda 2 was selected as the "2008 World Car of the Year" (WCOTY) at the 2008 New York International Auto Show and has established a distinguished position in the B-Car segment. To date, total global sales have reached approximately 370,000 units in the three years since its introduction, and Mazda 2 is now recognized as one of the global models which symbolizes the essence of the Mazda brand.

http://fuzzz.gaulin.ca/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/mazda2_18_4502.jpg

Dynamic Performance;
With the Mazda 2, Mazda evolved the athleticism that is inherent to the Mazda design DNA in pursuit of bold and diverse expression of movement. The basic form of the new Mazda 2 is characterized by a combination of dynamic performance, sportiness and simplicity that leaves a strong visual impression. While competitors are producing compact cars with a focus on a boxy body form to prioritize functionality, Mazda shortened the body overhangs and trimmed the corners to the greatest extent possible as a way to provide a form that is compact and sporty, conveys a sense of stability and inspires confidence. By carefully creating a base form and then giving it energetic character lines befitting a B-car, Mazda created a design that is highly distinctive, but timeless.

The U.S. car will enjoyable the Mazda 2

http://www.topcarreviews.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-Mazda2.jpg

The 2 debuted at the 2007 Geneva auto show, but Mazda’s plans regarding U.S. sales were still up in the air at the time. Now, seeing the continued success of other small cars here, Mazda will make a play at our market.

The U.S. car will forego the 1.3-liter inline-fours available in Japan and Europe in favor of a more powerful 1.5-liter four-cylinder. Power ratings are 100 hp and 98 lb-ft of torque—hardly numbers to get excited about, but competitive with the Fit’s 117 and 106, respectively. Weighing in, Mazda says, at 2300 to 2350 pounds depending on trim level, the 2 is a couple hundred pounds lighter than the Fit, so we expect Fit-like acceleration from the Mazda.

http://mazda.blogsome.com/images/mazda2_02.jpg

The 2’s price is nice, starting at $14,730, and our test example rang in at $16,985. As for the competition, the Ford Fiesta hatchback starts at $15,795, the cheapest Honda Fit is $15,650, and the Nissan Versa five-door can be had for as low as $14,270. But add options to those models to equip them comparably to the 2, and their prices zoom past this Mazda’s; we stand behind our conviction that it represents a good value. Besides, the 2’s lively handling makes it among the most rewarding to drive of the bunch, even though it loses in cargo versatility to the Rube Goldbergian Fit. If you want to keep the price down, though, the Mazda 2 Sport should drive exactly the same as this Touring, and it still has features like A/C, power windows and locks, and keyless entry as standard. In either guise, the 2 provides clear proof of that secret we mentioned up top: Small, cheap cars can deliver ample fun during everyday driving, and they don’t come much more enjoyable than the Mazda 2.

Green Mazda 2 line of stylish

http://images.paultan.org/uploads/2007/02/mazda2_1.jpg

Magazine-thin laptops, MP3 players and bite-size candy bars are just a few examples of good things that come in small packages. Now, for the first time in North America, Mazda is introducing its own affordable, fun-sized creation - the 2011 Mazda 2. A stylish, eco-friendly, fun-to-drive five-door hatchback, the Mazda 2 is Zoom-Zoom in its most concentrated form - compact and efficient, yet packed with style and substance. It will launch into the North American market in late summer, 2010.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_lHEPUmA_Ie0qeTFnD4YMbhyphenhyphenb8jY1574cHFk9yeCX3xoYeY9r1PJ6uAOrvl-ceJimFcQLjDOPmoZl8QkDMumyEZLzkwTsZeoRkX6lLyZVzQth3n1OARUxNiYwpPatmU9bf8h4ymze-Zo/s1600/1.jpg

Mazda 2 is the latest in a line of stylish, insightful and hugely fun-to-drive small cars from Mazda, and will bring an all-new level of refinement to the segment, as Mazda 3 did for the compact C-Car market. Mazda 2 is a car that only the engineers at Mazda could have created. It was designed and engineered from scratch to be a pure Mazda, offering the sort of driving experience that could only come from the company that developed the timeless Mazda MX-5 two-seat roadster, and it brings a combination of athletic design and dynamic performance to the subcompact class that simply does not exist at this time.

While developing the new Mazda 2

http://www.automotivez-review.info/images/mazda-2.jpg

While developing the new Mazda 2, Mazda took a thorough look at global subcompact car trends and carefully worked to identify the truly beneficial values that could be infused into a global B-Car. As a result, the new Mazda 2 adds Mazda's unique brand values such as exhilarating driving performance and eye-catching design to the segment without sacrificing the basic requirements for subcompact cars: superior fuel efficiency, high crash safety performance and ample passenger space. In fact, while other carmakers have increased the size of their small cars, Mazda's first mission was to analyze and define the optimal size of a compact vehicle. This resulted in a very efficient body size for the new Mazda 2 without sacrificing attractive features that consumers desire.

The 2011 Mazda 2 debuts as this Japanese automaker's new entry-level car. Available in several worldwide markets as the Demio, the 2 offered in the United States and Canada is a 4-door hatchback. It comes in Sport and Touring trim levels. The sole powertrain teams a 100-horsepower 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, remote entry, and 60/40 split-folding rear seat backs are standard on all models. Standard on the Touring are cruise control and steering-wheel audio controls. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.

The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan) is a compact car manufactured in Japan by the Mazda Motor Corporation. It was introduced for the 2004 model year, replacing the Mazda Familia (323 or Protegé in export markets). A more performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 is marketed as Mazdaspeed3 in North America and Mazda3 MPS in Europe.

A second generation Mazda3 for the 2010 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Auto Show.

The original Mazda3 MPS

http://www.autospecifications.org/car-reviews/wp-content/uploads/mazda-3-mps-2.jpg

the powertrain remains largely unchanged, the turbocharged 2.3-litre four-pot still developing 256bhp but gently reworked for a little more mid-range torque and, importantly, lower emissions and improved economy – CO2 output is down by 5g/km, and the engine now meets Euro 5 regulations. Leaving the power figure unchanged isn’t a problem: even now, 256bhp is right up there with the new RenaultSport Megane, Seat Leon Cupra and Vauxhall Astra VXR.
Under the newly-steroidal metal, Mazda has heavily revised the MPS’s bodyshell, improving torsional stiffness by 41 per cent. The chassis has been beefed up too, with much thicker anti-roll bars and stiffer shocks and springs. Weight is down by 50-odd kilos. All good stuff, but how is it out on the road?

Fast. Really, significantly fast. The new MPS will crack 62mph in just over six seconds, barely a tenth slower than the Focus RS. Though not quite as ballistic when it gets on turbo as the Ford, it’s still an indecently rapid thing, noticeably quicker than TG’s Slightly Sensible Hot Hatch of Choice, the Golf GTI. Find a straight piece of motorway, bury the throttle in third and feel the horizon hoover you in as the MPS gets on boost at around 2,500rpm and keeps pulling hard to 6,000rpm – it’s clear you’re in a serious bit of machinery. Mazda has improved sound deadening in this new 3, which is great for motorway cruising but not so good for maintaining a squeaky-clean licence: it’s the sort of car where you can be happily pottering at 60-something in the inside lane, absentmindedly squeeze the throttle to pass a caravan and suddenly find you’re hauling triple figures and have mysteriously acquired a full police escort, a lengthy jail term and a new soap-wielding best friend called Chopper.

A proper base-spec MPS, a car that undercuts the Focus ST, Golf GTI, Renault Megane et al while offering more pace and power would be a tempting prospect for the committed hatchist. But at this price it’s tough to see why you wouldn’t forgo a bit of kit and opt for the Golf, or save up for a few more months for that proper hot-hatch supercar, the Focus RS.

Unlike the last-gen Mazda3 MPS, the new version manages to be as interesting on the road as it is on paper – in a good way, for the most part. But in a market packed with glitteringly brilliant hot hatches, it’ll remain a niche choice. Tough crowd.

The second-generation RX-7

http://www.todoroki-trading.com/stock/mazda/404-RX7/image2.jpg

Mazda dropped the RX-7 from the U.S. market in 1995 after sales fell rapidly. However, more than a decade later, RX-7s from a generation earlier continue to do quite well in the used car market. The important thing for someone used car shopper considering indefinite article used with nouns used RX-7 is research, research, and more research. Due to Mazda's commitment to innovation, there are wild performance and reliability swings from year to year.

Potential buyers would be best off avoiding the first generation entirely unless they are targeting it with a collector's eye. While the first-gen RX-7 is fun to drive, it doesn't hold up as a general-purpose car after all these years. The second-generation RX-7 for sale beginning in 1986 raised output to 146 horsepower with its 1.3L engine, and the car had an independent rear suspension for the first time.

Mazda sold their very first RX-7 Turbo as indefinite article used with nouns mid-model-year release that year as well. The turbocharger on the 1.3L rotary raised horsepower output to 182 mph, and 0-60 mph times were in the low 6-second range. Prior to 1986, Mazda had done high performance and superior handling but never at the same time. The Turbo is notable for being the first time that Mazda found the perfect balance with the RX-7. The original RX-7

American car buyers don't normally associate the classic sports car with Japanese automotive innovation. However, there have been models that were able to transcend this bias, and perhaps the best example of such an occasion is the Mazda RX-7. The original RX-7 for sale was a 2-door coupe with a sleek style and a unique rotary engine that Mazda packaged at a very affordable price. These factors converged to make that original 1979 Mazda Motor Corporation RX-7 an instant sensation.

When many think of Mazda and the RX-7, they think of Mazda's, at times odd, commitment to the rotary engine. The rotary engine had the benefit of being lighter and more compact than other engine options at the time, but those benefits came at the sharp cost of diminished fuel efficiency. However, what was even greater than Mazda's commitment to the rotary engine was the company's commitment to innovation.

With the RX-7, Mazda remained on the leading edge each year by overhauling the car to an extent that no other automaker matched. While this drive to innovate was the primary force behind the success of the RX-7, it would as well be the model's eventual downfall. With the third and final generation of the RX-7 for sale, Mazda set out to create first letter of the English alphabet first letter in the Latin alphabet pure sports vehicle, but they did so with tunnel vision.

The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan) is a compact car manufactured in Japan by the Mazda Motor Corporation. It was introduced for the 2004 model year, replacing the Mazda Familia (323 or Protegé in export markets). A more performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 is marketed as Mazdaspeed3 in North America and Mazda3 MPS in Europe

Mazda has unveiled its 2010 Mazda3 sedan here at the LA Auto Show and we managed to snap some nice shots off as it was spinning around on a huge rotating stand. It's a good looking car that Mazda says carries on its "family face" with stylish bulges and creases that attract the eyes, and we're really looking forward to seeing the hatchback version as well. Underhood is a newly-enlarged 2.5-liter version of Mazda's MZR inline-four that offers up 167-horsepower and can be mated to either a 6-speed stick or 5-speed auto. As before, a standard 148-horsepower 2.0L four will be available and can be had with either a manual or auto tranny with 5 forward ratios each.

The Mazda6 new Stylish

The Mazda6 was the first example of the company's new Stylish, Insightful, and Spirited design philosophy followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, RX-8 in August 2003, Mazda3 in January 2004, Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, MX-5 in October 2005, and Mazda CX-7 in November 2006. The Mazda6 is the successor of Mazda 626, also known as Mazda Capella and Mazda Cronos. The 2002 Mazda6 is essentially the 4th generation Mazda 626 as the Mazda6 continues on the G-platform, progressing from the GF-platform 626/Capella to the GG-platform Mazda6

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCMXvO6feODscOHJmMnC6oJCs3wQvRLA3AnLNaj5hxuxm4OcI8MkfSzRil1DXwIQmR7_DjwDWfq7AmVsOaBleBjqywxySxEJOKkd_ys_0n47fXrQ6ZP5mm0ueGbOSaBNd_SaC47QuVmc-0/s400/dlr2009+Mazda+6.jpg

While the Mazda team refuses to officially acknowledge that the 6 sedan is the diesel engine's destination, the company has previously announced the engine will first appear in a "next-generation midsize sedan.

The 6, though, might not be the only diesel Mazda. The CX-7 crossover seems a natural candidate and U.S. executives seriously want a Mazda 3 with a diesel, but that compact car presents a pricing challenge.

The Mazda RX-8 successor is currently

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRUK3sJIX9B62qdDA3XMOkKer5WjF0c6qP1XhvlbtGdIXchXKYhCNWAF3rZGmlSPBDkSibKbGaTfcSgrNuxfHRU-ZaEliqYNfwtplm_H06i1dpH1_4D2M8QuOIJl8m06NzOnHhyCueNuc/s1600/Mazda+rx+8+custom+exhibition.jpg

The next generation rotary engine, dubbed "16X," is currently under development.Rumours suggest that the RX-8 may be replaced by a new smaller, lighter, simpler rotary engine sports car set to compete with the likes of the upcoming Toyota FT-86. It is also rumored to use Mazda’s new 16X rotary engine which is said to be ‘quite a bit bigger’ than the current twin-rotor design.

Key points for the RX-8 successor include the introduction of direct injection technology – a first for a rotary engine. The new car will also have aluminium side housings, 1600cc capacity instead of 1304cc of the 13B RX-7 and RX-8 engine, and new engine dimensions with increased stroke and reduced rotor width for improved thermal efficiency and more torque.

Japanese reports and Autocar both claim that the RX-8 successor will have around 290 horsepower. They also claim the car should weigh in around 2800 lbs, making it a true light-weight sports car.

The RX-8 successor is currently in development, and should be in production by 2014.

Mazdaspeed-tuned RX-8

Mazdaspeed, Mazda's in-house tuning and high-performance arm, has produced various after-sale parts and accessories for the RX-8, including full body kits, suspension upgrades, engine upgrades (such as cold air intake kit and catback exhausts), and various interior accessories. In addition, Mazdaspeed has also produced several series of showroom-ready limited-production RX-8s in Japan featuring some of these parts and accessories. To date, however, there has not yet been a full Mazdaspeed-tuned RX-8 along the same line as the Mazdaspeed6 or Mazdaspeed3

The 2009 Mazda RX-8

The 2009 RX-8 also receives design enhancements that are meant to freshen the styling and give the RX-8 a new look, without impairing the basic design theme. Refinements for the 2009 model year include a more aggressive restyled front and rear bumper as well as a new front fascia. The 09 RX-8 also comes with sporty, high-quality finish front and rear headlamps as well as larger exhaust pipes (now measuring 90 mm across). The 2009 RX-8 also offers a new five-spoke wheel design featuring a symbolic and sporty design reminiscent of the rotary engine, with different arrangements for each wheel size.

Mazda engineers improved the RX-8

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCB723kYiPhPmX1Dd5qo3t3d3zNAm2-rdXZ77-mBzwbzIQip4YwyR7KUkXGUTWnqkK8qQsgAaPQZFbT0Lbo8xnexjYRmC1Yq-KSkqhv4XhmmAz9rhSt-eYTJgJ2KGpOAkeC9yO7pEpAfs/s400/Mazda_MC_RX-8_FUS7256.jpg

For 2009, Mazda engineers improved the RX-8 body rigidity through the addition of structural reinforcements, by adding a trapezoidal strut tower bar and enhancing the local rigidity of the front suspension tower areas. The 2009 RX-8 is also 90 lbs lighter than the previous (2003-2008) models. Additionally, the rear suspension geometry has been reconfigured for better handling by improving driveshaft rigidity, lowering NVH levels, and improving overall performance. The 09 RX-8 has a different gearing ratio (on manual transmission-equipped cars) that is lowered from 4.444 to 4.777 for improved off-the-line performance. While minimal, these performance changes give the 2009 RX-8 increased acceleration and performance, as well as even greater responsiveness to the accelerator pedal. Mazda claims that the 09 RX-8 is a significantly faster car than the previous (2003–2008) model car due to the lighter weight, lowered gearing, and improved suspension.

In 2005, Mazda introduced the first special edition RX-8 called "Sports Prestige Limited" in Japan and "Shinka" in North America. Billed as a more luxurious grand touring model, this Shinka came with Black Cherry exterior color and Parchment leather interior along with subtly chromed 18" wheels. Only 1357 were made in the 2005 model year (though 2150 were scheduled, production never reached that amount). The most significant mechanical change were slightly revised Bilstein shocks and suspension cross member injected with urethane foam to improve ride quality.

Shinka returned for 2006 as a production trim package, now available in Copper Red, Galaxy Grey, and Whitewater Pearl. Only 1500 were made in 2006.

The RX-8 was designed as a front mid-engine, rear-wheel drive four-seat four-door coupé. The car has 52:48 front-rear weight distribution, and a low Polar Moment that is achieved by mounting the engine behind the front axle and the fuel tank ahead of the rear axle. The front wheels feature classic independent double wishbone suspension, while the rear are independent multi-link. Weight is trimmed through the use of materials such as aluminium and plastic for several body panels. The rest of the body is steel, save for the plastic front and rear bumpers. The manual gearbox model uses a carbon fiber composite driveshaft to reduce the rotational mass (moment of inertia) connected to the engine.

The first version of the RX-8, chassis code SE3P, was produced from model year 2003. It is powered by the RENESIS 13B-REW (multi side port) Wankel rotary engine displacing 1.3 litres non-turbo (1308 cc). At launch, the RENESIS was available in standard and high power versions. The 6-port standard RENESIS produced 210 hp (160 kW) and was coupled with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The 6-port high power RENESIS was only available with a six-speed manual transmission and was rated at 250 hp (190 kW). For the North American market, Mazda revised the reported output rating of the standard and high power RENESIS soon after launch to 197 hp (147 kW) and 238 hp (177 kW), respectively.[2] With exhaust ports now located in the side housing, the RENESIS boasted improved fuel efficiency and emissions rating over the 13B-REW employed by the last RX-7, thereby making it possible to be sold in North America.

A prominent feature of the RX-8 is a pair of rear-hinged "freestyle" doors (similar to suicide doors) in order to provide easier access to the rear seats. The RX-8 has no B-pillar between the front and rear doors, with the leading edge of the rear door acting as a "virtual pillar" to maintain structural rigidity. Because of the overlapping design, the rear doors can be opened only when the front doors are open. Although by no means expansive, the RX-8's cabin was designed to allow enough room to house four adults, making it a genuine 4-seater rather than a 2+2.

The RX-8 was sold on exports markets including in Europe, whereas the RX-7 had been withdrawn from these markets after 1996 due to falling sales and thereafter only sold in Japan.

While its not quite in the league as the last RX-7 in terms of raw performance, the RX-8 is considered its successor as Mazda's rotary engine sports car. Its layout and clever engineering, along with typical Mazda suspension tuning, have endowed it with excellent driving dynamics which have garnered much praise and numerous awards. It has also proven popular in Japan among car enthusiasts as well as aftermarket equipment manufacturers and

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Mazda Motor Corporation. It first appeared in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the successor to the RX-7 and, like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a Wankel engine. The RX-8 began North American sales in the 2004 model year.

Mazda introduced a convertible version of the RX-7 in 1988 with a normally aspirated engine — introduced to the US market with ads featuring Hollywood actor James Garner, at the time featured in many of Mazda's television advertisements.

The convertible featured a removable rigid section over the passengers and a folding textile rear section with heatable rear glass window. Power operated, lowering the top required unlatching two header catches, power lower the top halfway, exiting the car, folding down the rigid section manually, and then further power-lowering the top. Mazda introduced with the convertible the first integral windblocker, a rigid panel that folded up from behind the passenger seats to block unwanted drafts from reaching the passengers — thereby extending the driving season for the car in open mode. The convertible also featured optional headrest mounted audio speakers and a folding vinyl snap-fastened tonneau cover. The convertible assembly was precisely engineered and manufactured, and dropped into the ready body assembly as a complete unit — a first in convertible production.

The original RX-7 was a sports car. The compact and lightweight Wankel engine (rotary engine) is situated slightly behind the front axle, a configuration marketed by Mazda as "front mid-engine". It was offered as a two-seat coupé, with optional "occasional" rear seats in Japan, Australia, the United States, and other parts of the world. These rear seats were initially marketed as a dealer-installed option for the North American markets.

Though about 80 lb (36 kg) heavier and more isolated than its predecessor, the FC continued to win accolades from the press. The FC RX-7 was Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1986, and the Turbo II was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for a second time in 1987.

The 12A engine has a long thin shaped combustion chamber, having a large surface area in relation to its volume. Therefore, combustion is cool, giving few oxides of nitrogen. However, the combustion is also incomplete, so there are large amounts of partly burned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The exhaust is hot enough for combustion of these to continue into the exhaust. An engine driven pump supplies air into the exhaust to complete the burn of these chemicals. This is done in the "thermal reactor" chamber where the exhaust manifold would normally be on a conventional engine. Under certain conditions the pump injects air into the thermal reactor and at other times air is pumped through injectors into the exhaust ports. This fresh air is needed for more efficient and cleaner burning of the air/fuel mixture.[2]

Options and models varied from country to country. The gauge layout and interior styling in the Series 3 was only changed for North American versions. Additionally, North America was the only market to have offered the first generation RX-7 with the fuel injected 13B, model GSL-SE. A turbocharged (but non-intercooled) 12A engine was available for the top-end model of Series 3 in Japan.
